At New Mexico State University, Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) serves a dual purpose as the local Rho-Zeta chapter of the International Honor Society in History and as the History Graduate Student Organization (GSO). Undergraduate students are certainly welcome and encouraged to join and participate.
Involvement with the GSO does not require official membership to the national organization, but is strongly encouraged for furthering one’s personal and professional development.
The basic requirement for membership to the national organization is the completion of at least twelve credit hours in History with a 3.1 or higher GPA in History and a 3.0 or higher overall GPA.
To join Phi Alpha Theta at New Mexico State University:
Option 1 — National and Local Membership
Bring the application form and a check made payable to “Phi Alpha Theta” in the amount of $80.00 to the History Department Secretary Mary Holguin located in Room 239, 2nd Floor Breland Hall. The $80.00 fee is a one-time lifetime membership fee to both our local chapter and the national organization. There are no annual dues.
The national membership deadline for Spring Semester 2017 is TBD. Please check back later.
Option 2 — Local Membership Only
Bring the application form and a check made payable to “Phi Alpha Theta” in the amount of $30.00 to the History Department Secretary Mary Holguin located in Room 239, 2nd Floor Breland Hall. The $30.00 fee is a one-time lifetime membership fee to our local chapter. There are no annual dues.
There is no deadline for local membership.
*If you would like a t-shirt, please add an additional $20.00 (*cost pending*) and indicate on your application what size.
Each spring, NMSU’s chapter of Phi Alpha Theta attends a regional conference at which students present original research essays. This is not only a rewarding experience, for graduate students it can fulfill your public speaking requirement.
